Board of Education Candidates
The candidates listed below have filed paperwork to run for a seat on the SFUSD Board of Education and have requested to participate in the SF Parent Action endorsement process, led by families, for families.
We began our months-long, parent-led endorsement process and we announced our endorsements in June 2024.
Matt Alexander
Candidate Profile
“I’ve seen SFUSD’s many strengths, but I also watched the growth of some deep systemic problems, including fiscal and operational mismanagement, lofty rhetoric about equity and excellence but a lack of accountability for results, and a bureaucratic culture that’s been unresponsive to the needs of students, families, and school-based staff. My colleagues and I on the current School Board have taken concrete steps to address these issues and lay the foundation for a much stronger SFUSD.”
“Matt is a previous SFUSD teacher, principal, community organizer and incumbent board member; current term started January 2021. His children attended charter and SFUSD schools.
Budget: As a current Board of Education member, supportive of the budget proposal to make tough decisions (potentially including school closures or mergers).
Lottery System: Acknowledges goals and gaps and is supportive of the proposal to move to zones.

Virginia Cheung
Candidate Profile
“Virginia is a public school parent and works in early child development, education, and community services.
Budget: Supportive of SFUSD budget proposal (potentially including school closures or mergers) and understands constraints
Lottery System: Believes we should simplify the system.
Stance on 8th grade algebra: Supports but vote on Prop G is unclear
Stance on 2022 school board recall: Supported but vote on recall is unclear
Parag Gupta
Candidate Profile
“The next four years are going to be critical for SFUSD with a potential $421 million deficit, school closures, and failing standards in K-8 math and literacy to name a few. How we address these challenges will determine the viability of SFUSD and our city’s ability to attract and retain families for years, if not decades to come.”
Parag is a public school parent, a member of the San Francisco's Democratic County Central Committee, and a graduate of the SF Parent Action Board of Education Fellowship.
Budget: Supportive of SFUSD budget proposal (potentially including school closures or mergers) with a clear understanding of trade-offs and concrete suggestions.

John Jersin

“In my many years of public school, I grew to love my classes, found joy in learning, and thrived. My public schools fostered and celebrated excellence. I see too many students aren’t getting the same from SFUSD right now.”John is a parent of two non-school aged children, is a graduate of the SF Parent Action Board of Education Fellowship, and serves on the SFUSD Citizens Bond oversight committee.
Budget: Would like to see a more detailed budget proposal from SFUSD but understands the tradeoffs and hard decisions needing to be made.
